The short lifting hydraulic cylinder occupies a specific role in multi-stage mast design: it powers the inner carriage through the free-lift zone — the initial carriage travel that occurs before the outer mast sections begin to extend. In a full-free-lift mast, this means the forks can rise from floor level to the height of the collapsed mast without any increase in overall machine height. This capability is essential in applications where overhead clearance is limited — shipping containers, low-bay cold stores, and vehicles with fixed roof heights. The short stroke hydraulic cylinder used in this application has an unusually small compressed-to-extended length ratio, achieved through either a plunger design or a compact piston cylinder with minimal end clearances.

Design Distinction: Plunger vs. Piston Short-Lift Cylinders
Plunger Type
The most compact option for free-lift applications. A solid chrome plunger moves within a fixed gland assembly — there is no separate piston inside the barrel. The entire plunger cross-section becomes the pressure face, allowing maximum force output relative to the cylinder’s outer envelope. The gland carries all the sealing and guidance functions in a very short axial length.

Compact Piston Type
Where a longer stroke is required but compressed length is still constrained, a short-stroke piston cylinder with minimised end-cap thickness and no cushion volume achieves a useful stroke-to-compressed-length ratio. This design provides a larger differential pressure area (bore vs. rod annulus) and can accommodate internal check valves for load-hold function.

In powered pallet movers, a single short-stroke cylinder raises the forks just enough to clear the floor for travel — typically 150–200mm of stroke — making the cylinder geometry very different from a full-height mast lift cylinder.
