A hydraulic cylinder that will not extend has stopped receiving the pressure, flow, or mechanical clearance it needs to move. Unlike a slow-extending cylinder — which is a degree of the same problem — a hydraulic cylinder that will not extend at all provides a very strong diagnostic signal: the force produced by the system is either zero or below the minimum needed to overcome the load. Systematic diagnosis from the control signal through the valve, along the line, and to the cylinder itself resolves this fault in most cases within 20 minutes.

Diagnostic Flow: From Control Signal to Cylinder
Work through the hydraulic circuit from the control signal source to the cylinder, stopping at each component to test before moving on. A fault found at any stage means everything downstream is normal — no further testing is needed past that point.
For solenoid valves: use a multimeter to confirm the correct voltage is present at the solenoid terminals when the extend command is given (typically 12V or 24V DC). No voltage = electrical fault upstream of the valve. Correct voltage but valve not shifting = seized spool or failed solenoid coil. Try manual override if the valve has one.
Install a pressure gauge at the cylinder cap-end port. Command extension. If pressure rises to near the relief valve setting, the fault is mechanical — the cylinder cannot move despite receiving pressure. If pressure stays low or at zero, the fault is in the circuit between the pump and this point.
If a POCV is installed in the cap-end line, it requires a pilot pressure signal to open. If the pilot line is blocked, kinked, or connected incorrectly, the POCV stays closed and no oil can enter the cylinder. Bypass the POCV temporarily to confirm: if the cylinder extends with the POCV bypassed, the POCV or its pilot signal is the fault.
Disconnect the cap-end line at the cylinder port and verify that oil flows freely from the line when extension is commanded. If oil flows at the line end but the cylinder still will not extend, confirm the port is not plugged — remove and inspect the port fitting.
With hydraulic pressure removed, attempt to move the rod by hand or with a lever (on small cylinders). A rod that is mechanically seized due to a bent rod, seized bearing, or debris in the gland will not move regardless of hydraulic pressure. The cylinder must be removed for inspection.
