Why Standard Hydraulic Cylinders Struggle in Cold Weather
Standard hydraulic cylinders shipped with NBR seal compound are designed for ambient operating temperatures down to -20°C. Below this threshold, two things happen simultaneously: the NBR seal compound hardens and contracts, reducing the interference fit between the seal lip and the rod surface below the minimum needed to exclude oil. Simultaneously, the hydraulic oil viscosity rises sharply — a standard ISO VG 46 oil may increase from 46 mm²/s at 40°C to over 1,500 mm²/s at -20°C, making it nearly unpumpable through a cold system.
The practical result at cold start: no oil movement for the first 30–60 seconds while the pump struggles against near-solid oil, followed by leakage from rod seals that are too hard to maintain contact pressure, followed by a gradual recovery as the system warms. In agricultural machinery that must operate at first light on cold mornings, this cold-start behaviour is unacceptable. The correct specification prevents it entirely.

Hydraulic Oil Grade for Cold-Weather Operation
Oil viscosity at cold start determines whether the pump can circulate oil before seizing or cavitating. The key parameter is the oil’s pour point — the lowest temperature at which it remains pourable — and its viscosity at the minimum start-up temperature. The viscosity at start-up must not exceed approximately 750–1,000 mm²/s for the system to prime and circulate.
ISO VG 15 or VG 22
For systems that must start at -25°C to -35°C. Provides adequate cold-start viscosity but may be too thin at high operating temperature for heavy-duty applications.
ISO VG 32
For start-up at -15°C to -25°C. Common in Scandinavian agricultural machinery. Check compatibility with seal compounds — thinner oils reduce the oil film protecting seal surfaces.
Multi-grade Hydraulic Oil
10W-30 or 15W-46 equivalent grades maintain cold-start pumpability and adequate high-temperature viscosity. The preferred choice for outdoor machinery with a wide temperature swing from cold night to warm working day.
Avoid Oil Grade Mismatch
Never assume that a lower viscosity oil is compatible with the cylinder’s seal compound. Some seal compounds swell in VG 15–22 oils. Confirm compatibility with the seal compound specification before changing oil grade.
Cold-Weather Operation Practices
Beyond specification, cold-weather operating practices extend seal and system life: allow the hydraulic system to idle for 2–5 minutes at low load before applying full working pressure — this warms the oil and softens the seals before they are stressed. Cycle the cylinders slowly through short strokes at first to distribute warm oil across the seals. Retract rods fully before parking overnight — the barrel and wiper provide more protection to the rod and seal zone than exposure to cold air.
