The lifting hydraulic cylinder drives vertical travel of the forklift’s inner mast and carriage. Why Single-Acting Is Preferred for Forklift Lifting

A double-acting cylinder in the lift position would require hydraulic pressure to lower a load — if the hydraulic system fails while a load is elevated, a double-acting cylinder traps the load at height with no safe lowering mechanism. The single-acting design allows the operator to open the lowering control valve to let the load descend under gravity regardless of pump or engine status. This is a fundamental safety principle in industrial vehicle design, and it is why virtually all counterbalance forklift lift cylinders are single-acting.

Slow lowering is typically caused by a restricted or undersized lowering control orifice in the valve or in the cylinder’s base port fitting, hydraulic fluid that has thickened due to cold temperatures or contamination, or an undersized return line restricting flow back to tank. Verify fluid viscosity and inspect the lowering valve orifice for debris.
2. How do I know if the lift cylinder is causing load drift? +
Cap the hydraulic ports at the cylinder while the mast is elevated. If the mast still drifts down with ports capped, the fault is at the control valve or lowering valve, not the cylinder. If drifting stops with ports capped, the cylinder piston seal or check valve has failed and requires service.
3. Can a forklift lift cylinder be rebuilt, or should it be replaced? +
Rebuilding is viable if the bore is undamaged (no scoring or corrosion pitting) and the rod is straight with no chrome delamination.
